Appearance:
Alice has dark hair like her father, and brown eyes like her mother. She is of average height and keeps fit by challenging Steven on the Wii fit she bought him last Christmas. She tends to dress casually, as the mother of an active boy needs to, to keep up with him.

Personality:
Alice was born to be a mother. She adores her son and considers him to be the best thing that came out of her disastrous marriage to Steven's father. She is grateful that his father hasn't made life difficult for her regarding custody of Steven, but feels guilty for feeling this way, as her son would dearly love to see more of his father.

Alice is a very practical woman, who tends to problem-solve quickly on the run whenever something comes up either at work or at home. She very much enjoys her work in the Mayor's publicity department, but definitely prefers working part-time so she can finish in time to pick Steven up from school. While she thinks it would be nice to have someone to share the burden of everyday life with, she doesn't dwell too much on this. Her son is enough to keep her going, and while she has sometimes wanted to have a second child (a daughter) she has begun to wonder if this wasn't meant to be.

In some ways Alice is envious of her father's 'gift', though she can see the downside as well. She could think of nothing worse than having to bury her son and frequently prays that she will never have to. In fact, she would quite happily give her own life if it meant Steven would continue living.

Alice's relationship with her father is complicated, to say the least. Her mother was adamant that danger followed him wherever he went, and she spent most of Alice's childhood trying to avoid him, while filling Alice's head with bitterness about her father. Older now, and a mother herself, Alice understands that her mother was just trying to protect her, and she intends to do the same with her son, keeping Jack at arms length, no matter how much Steven wants to see his 'Uncle Jack'.

She and Jack had a relationship, which resulted in the birth of Alice Carter. Lucia warned her grandson, Steve, that one day, presumably because of Torchwood, he would be in trouble if he wasn't careful.

History:
The first seven years of Alice's life were idyllic, in retrospect. She had her mother and her father, and they were happy. At least, that's what seven-year-old Alice had assumed. Unfortunately, she was quite mistaken and in 1977 her mother fled, taking her daughter deep undercover and changing their names. Alice didn't understand why they were running away and pined for her father until eventually her mother's bitterness began to effect the young girl, raising suspicions about just who her father really was.

It wasn't until she had her own child that she felt she began to understand her mother's actions. She was forced to end her marriage and leave to keep her son safe, though she didn't need to go to the extremes that her mother had. Joe hadn't exactly been happy with the way things had ended, but he had soon gotten over it when he realised he had his freedom back.

Settling back in Cardiff, Alice knew she was playing with fire, moving back so close to where she knew her father was, but something drew her back. With the settlement from her divorce, Alice bought a house in a nice suburb and enrolled Steven at the local school. Once he was settled in, she started looking for a job to fill in the hours when he was at school and soon found one working in the Mayor's office, in the publicity department. This was ideal as she was able to leave before Steven finished school so she was always there to pick him up.

Alice did not approach her father, but nor did she hide her movements around Cardiff. She knew that sooner or later, Jack would find out she was back and then he would approach her - if he wanted to. Alice still wasn't entirely sure if she wanted him back in her life, and denied to herself that this was the ultimate test of a father's love. Surely she was too old for such games?

Alice Carter

Alice Carter (née Melissa Moretti; previously Sangster) is the daughter of Captain Jack Harkness and another Torchwood agent, Lucia Moretti. Alice's birth name was Melissa Moretti, but she has been under deep cover since 1977. Her precise history is unclear, but her mother died in 2006 and she is aware of her father's immortality, which she apparently has not inherited, as she ages normally. Her son, Steven, is unaware that Jack is his grandfather, instead believing Jack to be his uncle. Although their relationship appears uncertainly affectionate, Jack and Alice rarely have contact as Alice dislikes his work and the reminder that he will outlive her, as well as trying to protect her son from Jack's work at Torchwood.

Steven Carter appears in Children of Earth and is the grandson of Captain Jack Harkness. He believes Jack to be his uncle, and is unaware of Jack's immortality and agelessness. The two appear close, although their contact is infrequent. His father's name is Joe. His father isn't around much. He phones every now and then, sends postcards and remembers his birthday.
